  • Skilled trades get boost from Gen Z The growing cost of college and doubts about its utility are good news for the skilled trades. Fields from plumbing to machine tooling, long understaffed, have seen pay rise — and the youngest generation is taking note. Enrollment in vocational-focused community colleges has reached its highest level since 2018, after surging 16% last year. Those studying HVAC and car maintenance rose 7%, while those pursuing building trades jumped 23%. New hires in construction have seen their median annual pay outstrip that in the professional services and information sectors for four years running.
